Inventing Anna — the latest series from Shonda Rhimes — is now streaming on Netflix. The show tells the story of real-life scammer Anna Delvey (played by Julia Garner) and the journalist, Vivian (played by Anna Chlumsky), who chased down her story. Anna managed to infiltrate the New York elite thanks to her quick wit and fake persona all the way up until she couldn’t pull off the facade anymore.
Julia Garner is proving to be one of the most brilliant actresses working today (Ozark should be enough proof of that). Anna Chlumsky portrays the most unique sense of suppressed yet uncontrolled chaos, and I thought she was amazing in Veep as well. Arian Moayed is on a hot streak of acting performances following recent appearances on Spider-Man: No Way Home, Inventing Anna, Love Life, and Succession. His agent deserves a raise because he is booking some of the biggest shows and films out there. Laverne Cox plays a minor role here as Anna’s friend Kacy, and it’s always a delight any time she shows up on my screen. Alexis Floyd steals just about every scene she’s in, so she has quickly earned a spot on my actors-to-watch list.
It’s a fascinating story, and the series features a surprisingly rap-heavy soundtrack that sounds like it wouldn’t work, but every song fits so well within the context of the show!
