Super Soundtrack: “Heartstopper” on Netflix

“Heartstopper” is officially streaming on Netflix worldwide, and I suspect this will be a big hit for many different audiences. The way it captures a Gen Z’s Spotify playlist without sounding like a collection of viral TikTok hits was done so tastefully, and the songs were perfectly aligned with the tone of each scene.

Heartstopper is officially streaming on Netflix worldwide, and I suspect this will be a big hit for many different audiences. Starring Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Yasmin Finney, William Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Olsson, Tobie Donovan, Sebastian Croft, and Jenny Walser (oh yeah, and Olivia Colman pops up as well in a super surprise role), all of these actors are about to be getting a lot of phone calls to be in new series and films.

I love how this show offers a realistic depiction of representation without making a whole big ~thing~ about it. Instead, it takes on a more universal theme of acceptance and love, which is something I think we could all use a little more of right now.

These characters are charming, and the awkward high school moments are all too relatable. I honestly don’t know if there are plans for future seasons, but I just know I’ll be first in line for a continuation of this story. (Also… I nearly shrieked when Olivia Colman popped up on my screen. I have no idea how they kept this a secret for as long as they did.)

As this is an adaptation of a web comic, I especially enjoyed the little onscreen animation graphics sprinkled throughout the series. Whether it was a bunch of flurrying leaves, a spark of electricity, or exploding hearts, it really added to the whimsy of the story.

Once I started watching this show, I couldn’t stop, and I suspect that you’ll find yourself in a similar situation. The fun use of lighting, the raw performances from these up-and-coming actors, and the music… oh my gosh, the music!

Of course you would suspect a site called MusicNewsRumor.com to hone in on the music, but it really was exceptional. The way it captures a Gen Z’s Spotify playlist without sounding like a collection of viral TikTok hits was done so tastefully, and the songs were perfectly aligned with the tone of each scene. This soundtrack successfully punctuates every heart stopping moment of this show, and it will be among the top of my list when it comes to shows utilizing music in clever, meaningful ways.
